Jack Hamm, a luminary of wildlife art from the twentieth century, hailed from South Bend, Indiana in 1910 and initially cut his teeth as a commercial artist for the Curtis Publishing Company in Philadelphia. A move to the hustle and bustle of New York City soon thereafter launched a career that would see him make his mark in the world of wildlife art and illustration.

Throughout the span of his career, Hamm explored a range of artistic mediums to express his artistry – from oil to pastel and watercolor. His works were distinguished by strong outlines and lively hues to reflect the gracefulness of nature. In particular, he was recognized for producing intricate depictions of wildlife that oozed with dynamism and fizzed with vigor usually missing in other types of animal art.

Even more so, many collectors sought his exclusive “duck stamp” series of prints, created for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Founded in 1964, this establishment provided lessons for drawing and paintingNorthern American animals. Intricate guidance was also found in his extensive book collection, featuring titles such as Draw and Paint Wild Animals and Birds of North America and Drawing Animals – where novices and professionals alike could pick up a brush and learn. His pioneering vision has since been taken up by many modern-day creators, as his exceptional techniques live on through their artwork.
