On March 17, 1910, the world was graced with the birth of Jack Hamm, an iconic cartoonist, author, and educator. He rose to fame through the publication of Cartooning: The Head and Figure in 1953. This book has achieved an incredible worldwide success, having sold more than two million copies and been translated into 17 languages. Sadly, Jack passed away on December 8th, 1988.
Fort Wayne, Indiana acted as Hamm’s hometown, yet his career found its roots in Chicago. Starting off as a commercial artist, he eventually shifted to cartooning and found success across various news outlets like Time, Life and the iconic Saturday Evening Post.
In the early 1950s, the Art Institute of Chicago welcomed Hamm as an instructor in cartooning. His renowned book Cartooning: The Head and Figure was unleashed upon the world in 1953 and quickly became a hot item – with more than two million copies sold, and translations into 17 languages!
Clay Hamm left his mark on the world of animation with his collection of textbooks, including 1955’s How to Draw Animals, 1958’s How To Draw Cars, and 1964’s How to Draw Cartoons. He also contributed cartooning tutorials for The Saturday Review.
After providing over a decade of instruction, Dr. Hamm moved into retirement in the late 1970s, and sadly passed away just 10 years later.
